There was a point in my life when I discovered that getting fit took half the effort I thought it did... what an epiphany! I remember struggling with my weight as a young child, having moved from Michigan to Pennsylvania, without friends in the neighborhood to play with. Alas, sophomore year in high school I managed to swim the fat away, lift weights obsessively, and eventually tear apart my shoulders playing National level water polo.
Within several months, I gained 30 pounds and 17% body fat. It was disgusting. All of my joints hurt, my body moved slowly, and I couldn’t even find a pair of shorts that fit me after losing my luggage on the way to Argentina. They sent me to the “big boy’s” store.
I had so much joint pain that I was being tested for Rheumatoid Arthritis and Lymes’ Disease. The people in the stores in Argentina were joking about my legs looking like tree trunks and laughing that I couldn’t fit into a pair of pants.

How could this be? I had now been an athlete for years and a graduate of Penn State’s Kinesiology program. I was a personal trainer who helped people lose weight and build muscle all the time. I was even a doctor of physical therapy student, but somehow I just hadn’t put the pieces together.
It wasn’t until my physician told me that I wasn’t a surgical candidate and that I was going to have to “live with the damage and eventually stop working out” that I rebelled against this medical advice, got right down to business, and made this amazing discovery.

At the age of 6, I remember moving from Michigan to Pennsylvania and having a really hard time making friends. On and off, my mother's health waxed and wained, and I consistently gained weight for about 6 years. It became more and more difficult to make friends... they teased me about being the fat kid.
On the bright side, I was one of the first picks for playground football, because I could carry people down the field on my back. I was pretty strong, but my main advantage was weight alone. There was one kid who was jacked, and then there was me. When we played on the same team, it was all over.
During high school, I began playing sports much more competitively and losing weight by my sophomore year. By senior year, I qualified to play National Level Water Polo and regularly played for the USA East Water Polo Team. At this point, weight was no longer an issue, but self-confidence was because I knew if I stopped playing sports all of the weight would come back.
During college, I continued to play water polo for Penn State University, although my shoulders started to fall apart within the first 2 years. I later found out that I had rotator cuff tendonitis, biceps tendonitis, and 2 torn labrums.
In fact, my shoulders were so damaged that
the doctor told me I was inoperable.
I continued to play water polo anyway, and I loved every non-painful moment of it. Needless to say, I wasn't very inclined to work out or get back into the pool except for water polo for fear of hurting myself worse.
From senior year in college until the end of my first year in graduate school, I managed to gain 30 pounds. All of the joints in my body started to hurt, and I felt pain every single morning. The doctors wanted to test me for rheumatoid arthritis and Lyme's Disease. What a mess!
